Getting started

The best way to start planning your route is to make a list of your preferred destinations. Then, with the help of an atlas, try to put them in some sort of geographical order. Most Round the World's have mileage limits (29,000 miles is common) which is a measurement of the total mileage flown plus the surface mileage (so swapping a flight sector for a surface sector does not normally reduce the price). The lowest cost tickets avoid a lot of backtracking, so try to plan your trip in a continuous global direction.

Where can I go on a round the world ticket?

The combinations are endless. The examples here on our site will give you a good idea of what can be done but many more combinations are possible. When you have a rough plan of where you want to go, give us a call our specialist RTW consultants a call 0845 6801358 (Local Rate) and we will assist you in finding a suitable itinerary. We can construct ANY round the world route and have the latest airfare quoting systems at our fingertips and have access to all the latest Round The World deals.

When to go

Many airfares are based on when you start your trip. The lowest fares occur in low season and the highest fares are in high season - obvious really! Here is a general guide:
January - Shoulder / Low Season
February - Low Season
March - Low Season
April - Low Season
May - Low Season
June - Low / High Season
July - High Season
August - High Season
September - Low Season
October - Low Season
November - Low Season
December - Shoulder / High Season

How long to go for

All Round the World tickets are valid for 12 months, it is impossible to have an air ticket valid for longer than this. If you wish to stay longer then you will either have to forfeit the remaining part of your Round the World ticket or you could buy a One Way ticket. If you do this you must check the visa requirements directly with the relevant embassies, as many countries do not like you arriving on their doorstep without any obvious means of leaving!

How much will it cost?

Prices vary greatly depending on the number of stops you require and the location of the stops. Generally speaking fares start at around £800 for a very basic ticket and can go up to £2000 plus for some of the more complicated routes. The average price is around £1200 including taxes. Fares are often seasonal and prices are higher departing the UK at peak times. For the lowest fares it is usually (but not always) cheapest to depart the UK between April and June. Should your ticket involve much backtracking, e.g. not continuing in the same global direction, then you MAY pay more for your ticket. Tickets which include Africa and South America (or particularly both) are often more expensive. Our reservations consultants will be happy to help plan you the ideal route balancing your needs with the best deals available. You can call them on 0845 6801358.

What if my plans change?

The tickets we offer are some of the most flexible around. Most tickets are valid for 1 year and dates can usually be changed for free or for a small admin charge.

Getting around on the ground - surface/overland sectors

When you book your flight ticket, you do not have to fly in and out of the same city. Flying into one city and flying out of another is usually more interesting allowing you the chance to experience more whilst keeping  the cost of the airfare down. Overland routes popular with many travellers include - Bangkok to Singapore, Sydney to Cairns, Auckland to Christchurch and New York to Los Angeles. Other more adventurous routes include - Moscow to Beijing via the Trans-Siberian Railway, Rio de Janeiro to Lima, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Hanoi, Islamabad to Beijing, Cairo to Istanbul, New York to Santiago and Bangkok to Hanoi. We offer a range of superb value for money surface travel options including, rail and bus passes, overland adventure tours and some superb deals on worldwide accommodation.

How much money will I need?

This will vary depending on the countries you wish to visit and the style of travelling you adopt. Asia offers travellers some of the lowest prices in the world. Australia and New Zealand are excellent places for the traveller on a budget with excellent hostels and transport network but also offer plenty of activities for travellers to spend money on!  North America offers travellers excellent value but the main cities are often budget killers and transport can be tricky without a car. Our superb range of Greyhound Bus Passes and AMTRAK train passes offer excellent value for money. If you are planning to travel in Africa and Latin America, cost will  vary between countries quite a lot and will depend on your style of travelling.  Booking onto an overland adventure trip can be a cost effective way of travelling in these areas with the added security of travelling with others.
