| Edmonton is Canada’s most Northern city, nestled on the edge of prairies. Famous for its freezing winters and the huge West Edmonton Mall, the city has many other attractions. The North Saskatchewan river lazily winds its way through the city, dividing it in two. The forest which surrounds the river’s banks contains many trails and footpaths, which are often bustling with runners, walkers, cyclists, and, during the winter months, cross-country skiiers. The picturesque beauty of the river valley is certainly worth exploring, particularly during the autumn, when the leaves of the trees range from a golden yellow to a rich scarlet colour. Jasper Avenue is the centre of Edmonton, with many shops, restaurants and nightclubs. However, Whyte Avenue, which is situated on the Southern side of the river, has alot more to offer visitors. It has a variety of high street shops, quirky cafes and cosy pubs. Steeps Teahouse, situated at the Western end of Whyte Ave is a wonderful place to spend a snowy afternoon. It offers nearly two hundred different varieties of tea, several comfy sofas and a welcoming atmosphere. A few blocks on from Steeps is O’Byrnes Irish Pub, which is arguably the best pub in Edmonton. The SugarBowl restaurant is also worth checking out, it is a vibrant place that provides delicious food in a comfortable setting. If you’re hoping to experience something of Alberta culture then your best bet is to try some Alberta beef and go to a country bar. Whiskey Jacks at West Edmonton Mall is a line-dancing, two-stepping, cowboy bar, and is a good introduction to the Alberta lifestyle. For another truly Canadian experience try watching the ice hockey team play. Edmonton Oilers are in the Western conference of the NHL, and during the season play regularly at Rexall Place, which is easily accessible by public transport. Tickets for the Oilers are often quite expensive. If you’re looking for a cheaper ice hockey experience then the Oil Kings or University of Alberta Golden Bears are a good option. The nearest ski slopes are around four hours from Edmonton, near the mountain towns of Banff and Jasper. Sunshine Village ski resort, which is close to Banff, is a favourite of many Canadians due to its relative proximity to Calgary, its panoramic views of the Rockies and its wide range of slopes. Edmonton does have two small ski hills, Snow Valley and Rabbit Hill, although these both pale in comparison to the mountains. |
